Eco-Friendly Newborn Baby Essentials: Sustainable Must-Haves for Conscious Parents

Updated: Apr 28

Each baby goes through an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 nappies before potty training.

Imagine if even half of those were biodegradable.

Becoming a parent often makes you see the world through a new lens - one where future generations and the planet they will inherit suddenly feel very real. A recent trip of mine to Norway and a show I watched during my trip made me think about this a lot. With the annual celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd I wanted to write a blogpost about products that expectant and new parents will probably have on their lists to buy that are more friendly towards the environment.

The good news? Making eco-conscious choices for your baby doesn't have to be overwhelming or expensive.

Whether you are planning ahead during pregnancy or shopping for your baby’s first weeks, here are some of the best eco-friendly baby essentials that combine function, sustainability, and a little bit of style too - most of these companies could ship in Europe and the UK. Do you know of any other products I can add to this list? Let me know at info@parentpath.eu!

Nappies and Wipes

Let’s start with the big one: nappies. One baby = thousands of nappies = a lot of waste.

Choosing biodegradable or sustainable brands makes a huge difference.

Dermatologically tested and better for sensitive skin, made with sustainably sourced materials, and… have you seen those super-cute animal prints?! Gentle on skin and the planet as every nappy subscription protects 5 rainforest trees from deforestation through their partnership with the World Land Trust. I recently bought a few nappies for my daughter and they were so soft! Perfect for your baby’s sensitive skin.

✔ Wipes

Go for 99.9% water-based wipes or reusable cloth wipes to reduce waste and protect delicate baby skin - WaterWipes are a great option here.

You may also want to explore CheekyWipes, which are cloth wet wipes. This is a great alternative to disposable baby wipes - I was given a few as a gift and I personally found them super helpful for cleaning the baby after a feed.

Organic Baby Clothes

Your newborn’s skin is sensitive, so it’s a great idea to choose clothes made from organic cotton, which is grown without harmful chemicals and is softer on baby’s skin.

Brands to check out:

  • Little Green Radicals: They always use organic cotton protecting those who grow it, their families and their land. They also use recycled fabric, compostable clothing bags, recycled and recyclable packaging replacing thousands of plastic bags. And have you checked their super-cute collection? Have a look here!

  • Organic Zoo: Minimal, comfortable, and high-quality children's clothes created by Paulina and inspired by her childhood and her personal experiences. Always using organic cotton, creating timeless pieces, they even have a ‘Buy-back Scheme’!

  • Smalls Baby Shop: apart from the giveaway that you can find here, if you visit their shop between April 17 and April 22nd you may enjoy 15% off by using the code ‘parentpath15’ at checkout.

Tip: Start with essentials: sleepsuits, and bodysuits - newborns don’t need much!

Glass or BPA-Free Baby Bottles

Even if you plan to breastfeed, it’s handy to have a few bottles on hand even if it’s for later on when your baby becomes a toddler! Look for glass bottles or BPA-free plastic ones to reduce exposure to microplastics.

Popular choices include:

  • Lifefactory Glass Bottles: With different sizes and colours to choose from, these glass bottles are a reminder that healthier habits can have a real impact.

  • Philips Avent Natural Glass Bottles with silicone sleeves: Durable, sturdy and easy to clean - a great choice for feeding your little one.

  • NUK Nature Sense Bottles (BPA-free & ergonomic) can be used for thicker liquids as well.

Natural Skincare Products for Babies

Many baby skincare products are full of fragrances and synthetic ingredients. Choose natural, fragrance-free baby care to avoid irritation.

Brands to love:

  • Weleda Baby Calendula Range

  • Green People Organic Babies

  • Bioselect baby line:

  • Messinian spa

  • Aegli Skincare

Look for certifications like Soil Association, COSMOS, or EcoCert.

Reusable Muslins, Cloths & Towels

Skip the disposable wipes and opt for organic cotton muslins and reusable cloths. They’re multi-purpose, long-lasting, and can be washed and reused hundreds of times.

Tip: Keep a stash in every room. You’ll use them all the time.

Eco-Friendly Baby Toys

Babies don’t need a lot of toys at first - but when you’re ready, look for wooden, natural rubber, or fabric toys free from toxic dyes or plastics.

A few favourites:

  • Hevea Natural Rubber Teethers

  • Etta Loves

  • LoveEvery

  • PlanToys: nature inspired, truly sustainable wooden toys that your little one will love - with the code 'PARENTPATH15' you can get a a 15% discount site-wide

  • Melissa and Doug

Reusable Nappy Liners or Cloth Nappies

Not ready to go full cloth? No worries. You can start with reusable nappy liners or use cloth nappies part-time.

Brands like:

  • Bambino Mio: ommitted to promoting reusable, eco-friendly baby products that make a positive impact on our planet

  • Close Pop-In: comfortable on newborns, this brand highlights the benefits os reusable nappies being threefold: economy, ecology and well-being.

Bonus Tips for a Greener Start:
  • Buy second-hand: Facebook Marketplace, local mum groups, or apps like Vinted are brilliant for pre-loved baby gear.

  • Keep it minimal: Babies don’t need as much as marketing makes us believe. Less stuff = less waste.

  • Think about packaging: Choose brands with plastic-free or recyclable packaging when possible.

Final Thoughts: A Greener Path to Parenthood

Choosing eco-friendly baby products isn’t about being perfect - it’s about making small, sustainable swaps that feel right for your family. Whether you’re ready to commit to reusable nappies or just want to switch to organic baby lotion, every little step helps.
